During the 2014 pay dispute when we went out on strike with our sister unions Unison and Unite, we registered approximately 300 picketers at the University of Liverpool. Our pickets were lively, loud and we collectively made a massive impact – this was, as UCU members will know, the action which helped us break the public sector pay cap of 1%. We pushed them to 2% but with our pay decreasing in real terms year on year, we saw 2% as a win!
I was very proud to lead this march from the University of Liverpool campus down through the city centre to St George’s Hall. It was a fantastic demonstration of joint union solidarity and has given our branch strength in our negotiations ever since.
